Speaker Tube Phone Pack
When Nokia launched a new mobile phone that had better audio for music they wanted to get them in the hands of 1000 celebrities worldwide.
This pack was very unusual as it comprised an aluminium tube with a closed end and a speaker grill type array of holes which were precision drilled using water jets at very high pressure.
The tube was 'spun' by hand using a many centuries old technique which was quite magical to watch and took a flat sheet to finished tube in several steps using just a lathe and something that looked like a broom handle with a leather pad on the end.
The foam core was precision machined to accommodate the phone and Sennheiser headphones and in such a way that its clam-shell design both held it inside the tube without sliding out but also resulted in it opening itself when it was removed from the tube.
The interaction of foam core and metal tube took a lot of design work and experimentation to make the whole pack work.
